"Cankids 2nd Capacity Building workshop for Pediatric Cancer Support Services & Pediatric Palliative Care"
14th to 17th December 2010, New Delhi, India
Under its Pediatric Palliative care project, CanKids...KidsCan organized a 2-day capacity building
workshop for its team members from 14-15th December 2010 at New Delhi, India.
We have already done our 1st Pediatric Palliative care workshop in November 2009 attended by
Cankids members as well as other palliative care professionals in Delhi such as RGCI, GCCI, AIIMS
& other NGOs. In the previous workshop we focused on sensitizing ourselves on the first level and
everyone that attended the workshop. The workshop offered an introduction to palliative care for
children with chronic illnesses, psychosocial care, communicating with children and their family
and ethical issues. It helped us in understanding the problems and issues in Pediatric Palliative
care & making a new commitment to "Pain free Treatment Procedures" guiding us further on creating
our own plan of actions and deliverables to help us improve our standards of care and support.
With the guidance of our last workshop, we have taken several initiatives in our Palliative care
project such as the implementation of the "Pain free Treatment Procedures" in AIIMS & IRCH, our home
based care, improved patient navigation etc.
This 2nd workshop was a step ahead towards improving our services specifically focusing on pain
management, alleviation of physical symptoms and more proficient communication skills for the team.
The workshop which was intended to empower the Cankids team through building skills in the field of
pediatric care, was attended by 45 members including the management, staff, parent and survivor
support group, social workers and volunteers. The focus areas were symptom management, counseling,
and pain and procedural support. The workshop was provided by Dr Anjay Babu Sadasivan, CanKids
Pediatric Palliative Care Physician & Palliative care consultant - GCCI, New Delhi.
