Stories From The Frontline
Spotted on TV, trudging towards the border from Delhi, Vishakha's story exemplifies CanKids commitment and the spirit of going above and beyond. Vishakha an osteosarcoma patient and her parents were noticed on a TV channel by one of our survivor volunteers. Working overnight using multiple channels, they were identified, located, brought to the safety and security of our Home Away From Home and the next day were sent in an ambulance to their home in Pushkar!
The girl in the violet mask is Shreyashi, a six year old Blood Cancer patient who recently developed symptoms of Jaundice. To add to the mix, the hospital where her treatment was going on was declared as COVID hospital. The CanKids social worker made sure she is admitted in another hospital and her health shouldn't deteriorate. Shreyashi and her family are at our Home Away From Home now, safe and she continues her cancer treatment
The Cankids Healthline
COVID-19 Guidance for Children and Young People with Cancer undergoing Treatment
How might coronavirus affect my child who is undergoing cancer treatment?
Data currently seem to show that the infection is milder in children than in adults. However, children and young people undergoing cancer treatment have a weakened immune system which will make it harder for the body to fight off infections such as COVID-19. It is important for children with cancer and their families to follow steps to protect themselves where possible.
What precautions should we take?
Wash your hands often - with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. This is particularly important after taking public transport
Try to help your child avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands where possible
Avoid close contact with people who are known to be unwell
Try and cover your child’s cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the home and work environment
Cankids Partners With Milaap To Launch The C3 Initiative - Childhood Cancer and Covid-19 Emergency Fundraising
Children with Cancer have lower immunity and are more vulnerable than ever.We are building a protective ring around them with our C3 Initiative For Childhood Cancer and Covid. This includes procuring N95 masks, protection equipment, emergency food, shelter, medicines and transportation for children, staff and doctors. The needs are urgent and time is short. So we have partnered with Milaap to raise funds for the same. You can know more @ https://milaap.org/fundraisers/support-cankids-kidscan-1
How Are The Funds Being Utilized?: We are procuring masks and personal protective equipment for children, staff and doctors to protect them. All our Home Away from Homes (HAH) are open, so that families with childhood cancer patients, who can’t get past state or district borders and have no means to travel can stay. Our Pediatric Palliative Cancer center, unique in India in Delhi is running as a support center with OPD IPD and HAH on 3 floors, where doctors have requested for social support staff to attend. We are working on sending medicines and supplies to doctors and to families through air cargo, and other possible means We have hired ambulances to ferry staff and families for facilitating better treatment support services to children with cancer, and other services to their families. As blood supplies are running low in hospital blood banks, we are trying to ferry blood donors. We are already spreading awareness on COVID 19 in relation to childhood cancer through our Cankids Hospital Support Units (CHSUs) across India
