Medical Project & Support Services


Objectives:
  • Providing patient support for treatment on need base – so no child suffers for want of treatment for lack of finance
  • Upholding and Advocating for treatment of patients that adheres to globally and nationally accepted standard of care
  • Ensuring quality and affordability of drugs and diagnostics
  • Improving survival outcomes to achieve global standards one childhood cancer disease at a time
  • Identifying gaps in  treatment services and strengthening availability through partnerships with treating centers, Governments, and national and international advisory.
  • Building a network of support and services that provides access to treatment and referral pathways

Program Verticals


1. Patient Support for Medical Treatment (Direct & Facilitation)
Cankids Medical Support and Facilitation aims to provide Medical assistance for Childhood cancer families for treatment through direct and indirect support subject to
  • Fund availability
  • Adherence to globally and nationally accepted standards of treatment 

Direct Support – we support drugs, diagnostics, surgeries, radiation, BMT, prosthesis, ACT, palliative care

Funding is raised through our donors and CSR partners of the following - 

  1. General Medical Assistance Fund (gMAF)
  2. Adopt A Child Program (AAC)
  3. Cankids Hospital Support Unit Projects (CHSUs)
  4. Disease specific projects : – Sajeev CanKids RB Fund, Golden Crab ALL Fund, Hodgkin’s Fund, Bone & Soft tissue Sarcoma fund, Paediatric BMT fund
  5. ACT Fund & Palliative Care Support

Indirect Support – The Social Support Team we provide in the cancer centers through our CHSU holistic care projects provide financial counselling and facilitate access to funds and schemes of Central and State Govts. and other Trusts and NGOs.

Support is governed by the Cankids Medical Policy which aims to provide patient support while adhering to treatment standards, and subject to fund availability. Decision making is through Senior Management led Medical Committee meetings on ECHO platform, guided by the Cankids Board Medical Advisory.

MEDICAL PROJECTS- Medical Project verticals aims to manage unique challenges of various cancer related to childhood cancer diseases:
  1. Awareness advocacy and patient support for Acute Lymphocytic Leukaemia
  2. Awareness advocacy and patient support for Retinoblastoma
  3. Awareness advocacy and patient support for Hodgkin Lymphoma
  4. Awareness advocacy and patient support for Bone Marrow transplant

2. Medical Relations
Cankids aims to work with all relevant stakeholders, specially the government to systematically build a network of access to care and support, creating awareness and advocating for childhood cancer control plans, policies and programs to State Governments.

Medical Assistance Fund Report


1.  Contribution has helped us to significantly increase our support for the treatment of children with cancer in across the country by​
  • 22 % from 5047 new cases registered in 2016-17 to 6139 in FY 2017-18
  • 25% expansion in our pan India network from 45 to 55 CanKids Hospital Support units (CHSU) in centres treating children with cancer
  • 52% increase in the total direct medical spend to support treatment of children from Rs 4.10 crores in 2016-17 to Rs 6.38 crores in FY 2017-18.
2. Cankids Medical Patient Support program aims to ensure that no child should suffer for want of cancer treatment due to lack of finance. We provide medical assistance by way of drugs, medical supplies (needles, ports etc.), diagnostics, prostheses, transplants, blood and blood products including Single Donor Platelet kits etc. These are procured from medical suppliers/vendors at discounted rates for bulk orders in the various regions where we operate.  This is what we call Direct Support. In addition, the social support team also helps families to get access to various Govt welfare schemes that support treatment of cancer. We call this Govt Facilitation under our Sugamikaran program. In 2017-18 we gave direct medical support of Rs 6.38 crores and Govt Facilitation of Rs 16 crores. 
 
3. We fund our Direct Medical Support from a child-specific ‘Adopt-a- Child Fund (AAC), CanKids Hospital Support Unit CHSU Adopt a Unit program, other earmarked funds for specific cancers and our Medical Assistance Fund. In 2017-18 this break up was as under
