Swara Margaj – A Story of Bravery and Hope

Meet Swara Margaj, an ​11-year-old girl from Mumbai, who has shown extraordinary courage in her battle against Ewing Sarcoma.

​In September 2023, while in Std V, Swara began experiencing problems with her gait, unable to run or walk without support. After multiple tests, she was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma at BJ Wadia Hospital, Hematology – Oncology under the care of Dr. Sangeeta Mudhaliar.

​Diagnosis

In September 2023, while in Std V, Swara began experiencing problems with her gait, unable to run or walk without support. After multiple tests, she was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma at BJ Wadia Hospital, Haematology – Oncology under the care of Dr. Sangeeta Mudhaliar.

Treatment Journey

Swara’s treatment began on October 4, 2023, with a protocol that included chemotherapy cycles and surgery on her left leg above the knee. She has bravely undergone 11 cycles of chemotherapy and a major surgery on February 15, 2024.

​Cankids Interventions:

Social Worker Balkrishna from Cankids first met Swara and her family, providing counseling and registering them under the Patient Management System. The family was introduced to Cankids YANA – You Are Not Alone – for social support. Parent Support Group member Sunita Gupta helped them navigate treatment and offered emotional support. Cankids provided medical support of Rs. 25,000 and facilitated an additional Rs. 325,000 through other schemes. Educational support was also provided by teacher Manali, who helped Swara regain her confidence and continue her studies despite the challenges.

Impact

Swara's progress has been phenomenal. From losing her confidence and becoming shy, she has bounced back to being her cheerful self, excelling in her studies and actively participating in various activities. Swara has become a source of inspiration for other children and dreams of becoming a teacher in the future.

In May 2022, Shrishti’s family faced financial hardships but found support through KGMU LKO after being referred from SGPGI. Her treatment began on May 11th, 2022. Throughout her journey, Cankids provided essential support.

Cankids Interventions

Patient Navigator Savita from Cankids registered Shrishti under the YANA (You Are Not Alone) program on May 10th, 2022. The family received comprehensive support including drugs, diagnostics, and financial aid. At the HAH LKO Sapno Ka Ghar, Shrishti received holistic care, including educational, nutritional, and psychological support. This comprehensive support system helped Shrishti and her mother navigate the difficult journey of cancer treatment.

Impact

Shrishti's progress has been remarkable. Currently on maintenance therapy, she is happy and thriving. Her mother is deeply grateful for the unwavering support from Cankids, which has been instrumental in Shrishti’s recovery and overall well-being.
